Hey my dear Moggallanas! This is what I have received from ZhenFeng. Please read it and ensure that we have a successful CIP trip. :) Our objective for this trip is to spread happiness to our dearest elderly. :)
Please cooperate with the Events Organisor.
Good day fellow SBMY members, On 10th Feb 2007, we will be having our first major community service event. It will be to service the 1-room flat households for elderies. For your information, we had 2 community service event last year at a moral home and Ren-Ci hospital and members who were at the events have certainly gained some wonderful experience. Lets carry on to the main event. The objectives of this event are - spring-cleaning for the household - Bringing joy and laughter by interacting with the elderies living in the house - Presenting to them goodies pack for CNY As mentioned, spring-cleaning is to
clean and tidy up the entire house for the eldery.
Do take note that we are invited there to help out because the eldery have difficulities in doing those chores. Thus the environment in the house might not be what you expect, or might even turn out worse than what you initially thought. Do bring along an benevolent heart and do not mind the 'mess' that you might encounter but take that as a strong point to be more inspired to help them up. Remember to help them wash the toilets as well! :) We do not exactly know the character of the eldery. Thus it is advisable to carry out conversations and actions cautiously. for instance, when you want to move a table away from its original place, kindly ask for permission. These small gestures might means alot to them. do take note of the tone of your voice and the content of your dialogues. Do not ask them about sensetive issues like 'when your husband pass away' etc etc. you wouldn't want a tearful end to your conversations with them. you job is to interact, and make their day.
Strive on fellas! Goodie packs will be distributed to each household as a New year present. Remember to utter some auspcious stuff while presenting it to them! Lets all do out part in helping the others; in this case the elderies in their 1-room flat. Spread the compassion and kindness in you that will ultimately bring some simple joy to the elderies at the end of the day. SADhu to you :) see you all on saturday.Place to meet will be at SBM!!! Time TBC ( to be confirm )More details will be sent again... Brief guides for Mentors going for #01-2007 Community service!!! CAHF...... ( Come And Have Fun )

QUESTION: Is Buddhism scientific?
ANSWER:
Before we answer that question, it would be best to define the word 'science'. Science, according to the dictionary is: "knowledge which can be made into a system, which depends upon seeing and testing facts and stating general natural laws, a branch of such knowledge, anything that can be studied exactly".
There are aspects of Buddhism that would not fit into this definition but the central teachings of Buddhism, the Four Noble Truths, most certainly would. Suffering, the First Noble Truth, is an experience that can be defined, experienced and measured. The Second Noble Truth states that suffering has a natural cause, craving, which likewise can be defined, experienced and measured. No attempted is made to explain suffering in terms of a metaphysical concept or myths. Suffering is ended, according to the Third Noble Truth, not by relying on upon a supreme being, by faith or by prayers but simply by removing its cause. This is axiomatic. The Fourth Noble Truth, the way to end suffering, once again, has nothing to do with metaphysics but depends on behaving in specific ways. And once again behaviour is open to testing.
Buddhism dispenses with the concept of a supreme being, as does science, and explains the origins and workings of the universe in terms of natural law. All of this certainly exhibits ascientific spirit. Once again, the Buddha's constant advice that we should not blindly believe but rather question, examine, inquire and rely on our own experience, has a definite scientific ring to it. He says:"Do not go by revelation ortradition,do not go by rumour, or the sacred scriptures, do not go by hearsay or mere logic, do not go by bias towards a notion or by another person's seeming ability and do not go by the idea 'He is our teacher'. But when you yourself know that a thing is good, that it is not blameble, that it is praised by the wise and when practised and observed that it leadst o happiness, then follow that thing.
